Natural raw food for a cane corso

The feeding process is very important for all dog breeds and especially for a breed such as the cane corso where males can reach a weight of up to 60 kilos and females around 45 kilos. An Italian Mastiff puppy can multiply its weight in one year up to 50 times, yes, it is an incredible breed!

In our Cane Corso kennel we implement a natural raw and balanced diet, I personally take care of going to the supermarket to buy the ingredients because I need to make sure the dogs are fed well.

The morning meal for both puppies and adult dogs includes probiotic or yogurt which helps us prepare the stomach so that the natural diet gets better results. We mix it with yellow cookie, eggs and just a little bit of honey.

In the case of puppies, we grind up chicken (usually wings, carcasses or necks), grind up some liver and cook pumpkin, carrot and cauliflower.

As for the adults’ food, they eat chicken twice a day and consume a natural raw diet, a couple of times a week, containing beef, red meat, vegetables, fish (it has to be small and boneless).

Is it suitable to give concentrate to a cane corso cane dog?

In my case I prefer raw and healthy food but I understand that for a matter of time some people choose to buy feed. My recommendation is to buy it in specialized shops or vets, supermarkets in this case are not always a good option.

Make sure that the feed contains no artificial additives and that it maintains high protein levels such as Orijen, Gosbi, Acana, Legend, Nutro, etc. It is also necessary to take into account the biological value of the protein contained in the feed, that is, do not look at the percentage of protein but at how usable it can be for our dog’s body.

In other words, there are many feeds that have a high amount of protein but that provide a low biological value (not very useful) for the cane corso dog.

How many times should a cane corso dog be fed per day

The growth of the cane corso cane or Italian mastiff is very accelerated and that is why its feeding is very important. I recommend you to feed it 5 to 6 times a day until it is 5 months old. Then you can reduce their food in the following way:

  • 5 to 6 months: 4 – 5 meals a day.
  • 6 – 8 months: 3 – 4 meals a day.
  • 8 – 10 months: 3 meals a day
  • 10 months onwards: 2 meals a day.

Most dogs begin to have problems with overweight as they grow and become less active, so the amount of food decreases as they develop. The feeding of older dogs decreases in calories and protein. If you notice your Italian Mastiff is gaining weight considerably, decrease his food a little and you will notice how his weight balances out.

Food should be balanced

All dog breeds need a balanced diet of protein, nutrients, minerals and vitamins for healthy growth and development. The Italian or cane corso in addition to vitamins will need the following in the diet:

  • Good quality proteins should occupy 25% of the ration and will help your dog to have a good development of its tissues, muscles and organs. They also help prevent certain diseases.
  • Carbohydrates, which contribute to good growth, can be found in cereals.
  • Calcium, which is essential for healthy bones.
  • Fatty acids, which are essential for a healthy immune and nervous system. They also give your dog a lot of energy.
