Day-to-Day at the Kennel: Natural Dog Food
Let’s chat a bit about the daily grind at the kennel, especially the food we give our dogs. We know a bunch of you have been asking for a video showing how it all goes down, so here’s the scoop.
Getting the Dogs’ Food Ready
Today, around noon, it’s time to prep food for the puppies. We’re making about four days’ worth, and we usually go with 100% chicken meat. Thing is, we didn’t have time to grind up the veggies this time, so we grabbed the usual supermarket stuff—pureed pumpkin and carrot.
It’s simple: we toss about a kilo into each bowl, which adds up to roughly 15 kilos of food. Doing it yourself is way cheaper, but some days, time just isn’t on your side. If you buy the pumpkin, boil it, and blend it up yourself, it’s a lot better—though, yeah, there are days when that’s just not happening.
After that, we throw in some apple—chopped up nice and small. Usually, we’d add some anchovies too, but we were short on time today, so no biggie.
Sometimes we spend a whole day prepping the menu because everything we make here has to be checked, cleaned, and made just right for the dogs.
Natural Diet vs. Commercial Kibble
One question we get all the time is about the difference between feeding kibble or going natural. People ask, “What’s the big deal? Why not just stick to kibble?” Look, I get it—making natural food can feel like a chore for some. But here’s the thing: the quality of meat, like chicken, blows any commercial kibble out of the water. It’s not just about muscle quality—it’s the nutrients that do wonders for their skin and coat. You see a real difference with natural food.
When a dog’s on a low-quality diet, you can tell. They look down, low-energy, missing that spark every dog should have. Some folks go, “Oh, but kibble doesn’t have ash!” And here’s where I’ve got to make a point: dogs come from wolves, right? And what do wolves eat? Not ash. So why should dogs be eating kibble with ash in it? It just doesn’t add up!
No Time to Make Natural Food?
I know some of you are thinking this sounds like a hassle, that you don’t have the time—and I totally get that. But here’s a tip: if you can’t whip it up fresh every day, make a big batch, portion it out, and freeze it. Then just pull out what you need when you need it. You’ve got weeks’ worth of food ready to go.
Plus, if you go for a 100% natural meat diet, it’s leaps and bounds better than kibble with sketchy ingredients. Sure, they’ll tell you kibble has ash, but why do we even want ash? Dogs come from wolves—they need meat, not ash.
Balanced Feeding for Every Dog
At our kennel, we’ve got about 20 adult dogs, and each one’s got different needs. Some eat more, some less. A few need to drop some weight, so we tweak their portions. Others are underweight, and we bump up their food to get them where they need to be. It’s not like having just one dog at home—here, it’s all about balance, dialing in the right amount so every dog hits their ideal weight.
The key is making sure they get all the nutrients they need. They love the pureed mix we give them, and it’s not just tasty—it keeps them happy, full of energy, and healthy. We don’t always do the pureed stuff every day, but the point is keeping their diet balanced and making sure they’re well-fed.
Wrapping Up: Why Natural Feeding Matters
Bottom line: if you’ve got a dog and want the best for them, natural food is always a healthier pick than commercial kibble. Don’t get me wrong—I’m not saying all kibble is terrible—but when you know exactly what you’re feeding your dog, you can be sure they’re getting top-notch stuff.
And if you don’t have time to cook from scratch every day, keep it practical—make a batch, freeze it in portions, and save yourself the hassle. At the end of the day, it’s about giving them the best, because a happy, healthy dog is one that’s brimming with energy and love for you.
